English/American books
geschrieben von Mary-Lou
Hi everybody,

I like the idea of talking about books in English. We can write about our favorite books and so perhaps help others to find interesting literature.
Let me start with the novel that I read some days ago and liked very much: "The Moonflower Vine" by Jetta Carleton, a "rediscovered classic". It is about a family with four daughters living on a farm in Missouri during the first half of the twentieth century. While reading you can imagine very well the pretty nature, the scenery, the particular situations and also the emotions of the individual members of the family. You can smile and sometimes a tear will come to your eye. It is not very difficult to read, the language, however, is (in my opinion) very good.

Which book is your favorite???

Mary-Lou, the Moonflower Vine sounds like a book I might want to read.

Some of my favorite books are by Dick Francis who was an English jockey. His mystery novels are set against a background of horse racing. I like the sense of humor that shows through.

Hi,
Thank you very much. I liked the descriptions of Dick Francis' novels. I already ordered two of them and will enjoy them during my vacation when relaxing at the beach of the Baltic Sea next week.

I might mention that his books published before the year 2000 are the best.

@ All

I have been reading and I still read books from Harold Robbins. He just is a great and easy to read author for me.
Yes, I know Robbins is more trivial than somebody else but I like his understandable way to write very much.
Many books of him I have in different languages. American-English, German and Dutch for excample and I prefer American-English wroten books to translated books.
When I do not understand the meaning of a word or sentence than it is time to take the dutch or german version or an English dictionary in hand.
In the majority of cases I take the English dictionary. It is not a big problem.

At the moment I read the book called "Seemannschaft" - Handbuch für den yachtsport -Verlag Delius, Klasing & Co Bielefeld - because I intend to have vacation for two weeks in November on the yacht of a friend.

That will be an old and also a new experience for me and therefore I have to reread all the words and handlings I have forgotten.
Sailing-language is a precondition and ......... I do not want to make a fool of myself.

Have a nice evening

Thanks for this hint. The books I've ordered are from the nineties therefore I guess I get two good of the good ones.

Hey everyone! You should not miss the following book: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It's one of my favourites.. I love Oscar Wilde's writing technique..he uses words in an imcomparable way! Many of you might know the book in German (Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray) but I can really recommend reading it in English!

I also like this novel (Dorian Gray) very much and could hardly stop when reading the English version.
May I recommend another book: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett (2009). An American novel about the situation of black people in America's south in the early sixties. Sometimes a bit difficult to read beause the chapters are written from the point of view of different persons (with very different use of language) but nevertheless very interesting and a page turner.
(The film is - as often - not as good as the novel.

Hey Mary-Lou! Did you see the movie "The Help"? I've always wanted to read the novel and now the film came out.. I heard that the movie is also good. By the way, there is another very nice English book by Oscar Wilde: The Importance of Being Earnest. I simply love it!
