You story about how you went to England as a young person,  animated me to tell my story as well.
When I was 17 I went to an office in Zürich to have a look about going to England as an Au Pair.. (Householdhelp!)
I was asked where I wanted to go, so I said I want to go as south as possible, because I feel the cold quickly.
So we looked on the map and I choose Swanage. Do have a look folks where it is. One could say the A.. of the world!
OK, there was a job in a  Preparatory school for boys. The description of the job was “ scullery maid”
Now to my journey!
At that time lived at my half-sister and her husband with 4 children.
That couple brought me to the station at 11 pm in the middle of Zürich. I had with me 1 big case, half full with books and a few cloths.
I had to change in Switzerland once, cant remember where. Then I got through France and landed in Calais. There of course, just like jacare, I got the ferry to Dover.
IN Dover I caught a train to Victoria, changed to Waterloo Station.
There I was hungry and found a Restaurant called FORTES!
I went in, sat at a table and waited and waited!
After a long time one dear lady asked me if I wanted to eat something. As I could hardly speak English she took my hand, lead me to the counter. It was a self-service restaurant unknown to me then.
Bless her heart.
Afterwards I tried to phone my future boss. I went into a phone box and only saw letters on the dials.
Again I asked for help! Of course underneath the letters were numbers as well.
Unfortunately I did not have the proper change so I left phoning to later.
I got a train to Swanage and arrived around 10 pm. Now I still had to get to the school but there was no public transport until the next day. No phone box either. So I asked for a taxi and was then taken to the school still was still further towards the the end of the world.
As I arrived at the Spyway School we had to call outside a window as there was no other way to attract attention.
I was not expected on that day as I forgot to inform.. ( redface)

Brief an die NASA

Greet God, I write you, because you must help me. I have seen your Space Shuttle in the far-seeing.
And so came me the idea to make holidays in the world-room. Alone, without my crazy wife. I am the
Stingeder Beni, and the King of Bavaria was my clock-clock grandfather. I stand on a very bad foot
with my wife. Always she shouts with me. She has a shrill voice like a circle saw, and she lets no
good hair at me. She says I am a Schlapp-tail. She wants that I become Bürgermaster. But I want
not Bürgermaster be. I have nothing at the hat with the political shit. I want my Ruah. And so I want
make holiday on the moon. Without my better half. But I take my dog with. He is a boxer. His name
is Wurstl. So I want book a flight in your next Space Shuttle. But please give me not a window place.
I would kotz you the rocket full, because I am not swindle-free. And no standing-place please - and
please tell my wife not, that I want alone go. She has a big Shrot-gun, and she would make a sieve
out of my ass. I need not much comfort. A nice double-room with bath and kloo and heating. And
windows with look to the earth. So I can look through my farglass and see my wife working on the
potatoe field. And I and my dog laugh us a branch. We will kringel ourself before laughing! Is what
loose on the moon? I need warm weather and I hope the sun shines every day. This was very good
for my frost-boils. With friendly Servus Beni

2020 is the year of the racoon.

Why?

Well, they always wear a mask,
They are fastidious at washing their hands,
and if you rearrange the letters racoon it then spells corona.

This morning our daughter took the train back to Berlin. It was still comletely dark when we took her to the station because she wanted to get  a seat with plenty of space around in order to be safe from corona virus infection. She had spent five days with us, her "old parents" who cannot meet her in Berlin because our usual hotel can only accept business peole and our daughter´s home is not big enough to accommodate us.

We had a very good time with our daughter. She did everything she could to make her parents happy. She did the cooking and spoilt us with vegetarian food which is her favourite. She loved taking long walks in the countryside with me. But she refused short trips with us in the car because according to her opinion thus she can contribute to save the climate.

I never noticed this input. There have to be two threads :-)
Yes I do love sunsets and I try to take photos of them too. If I search thoroughly, I may find an other one.
Greetings Yoli

Greetings jacare4
It sounds as if you had a lovely time with your daughter. She seems to spoil you. A shame she lives so far away from you.
Emil and I have three children. We celebrate three times x – mas. It would be too big a crowd if we were all together as we normally do.
Today our son and daughter in law came, last week a Daughter with two girls and Husband.
Next week we have the family of another daughter with 2 chidden and husband.
To be honest I would prefer to go to a restaurant as we normally do.
Well, maybe next year will be different.
I hope your Christmas is filled with joy this year!
Love Yoli

First Hallo in the New Year
I hope you are all not too depressed with the nasty Corona. I am sure in Germany is the situation as bad as here in Switzerland. Our Government does what has to be done. It seems not enough for some and too much for others.
As for me and my husband, we do go out a little and see friends and families but always only 2 of the at a time.
Yesterday I was at a funeral. The husband of my best friends died because (as well as ) of corona.
There were about 30 people there and most of the hugged each other. !!
Today the sun shines and we will go and have a little walk.
Take care all of you
And bless you
Love Yoli

The Hill We Climb
Amanda Gorman

When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
We've braved the belly of the beast
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace
And the norms and notions
of what just is
Isn’t always just-ice
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it
Somehow we do it
Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn’t broken
but simply unfinished
We the successors of a country and a time
Where a skinny Black girl
descended from slaves and raised by a single mother
can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one
And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn’t mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect
We are striving to forge a union with purpose
To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man
And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us
but what stands before us
We close the divide because we know, to put our future first,
we must first put our differences aside
We lay down our arms
so we can reach out our arms
to one another
We seek harm to none and harmony for all
Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:
That even as we grieved, we grew
That even as we hurt, we hoped
That even as we tired, we tried
That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious
Not because we will never again know defeat
but because we will never again sow division
Scripture tells us to envision
that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
And no one shall make them afraid
If we’re to live up to our own time
Then victory won’t lie in the blade
But in all the bridges we’ve made
That is the promise to glade
The hill we climb
If only we dare
It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit,
it’s the past we step into
and how we repair it
We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation
rather than share it
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy
And this effort very nearly succeeded
But while democracy can be periodically delayed
it can never be permanently defeated
In this truth
in this faith we trust
For while we have our eyes on the future
history has its eyes on us
This is the era of just redemption
We feared at its inception
We did not feel prepared to be the heirs
of such a terrifying hour
but within it we found the power
to author a new chapter
To offer hope and laughter to ourselves
So while once we asked,
how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?
We will not march back to what was
but move to what shall be
A country that is bruised but whole,
benevolent but bold,
fierce and free
We will not be turned around
or interrupted by intimidation
because we know our inaction and inertia
will be the inheritance of the next generation
Our blunders become their burdens
But one thing is certain:
If we merge mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy
and change our children’s birthright
So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with
Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,
we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
we will rise from the windswept northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution
We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
we will rise from the sunbaked south
We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
and every known nook of our nation and
every corner called our country,
our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it

Hello,

first of all I want to thank you, dear Yoli, for the text of Amanda Gorman´s poem. I was very pleased and impressed reading it. When I listened to it,  only minutes after Biden had given his oath as President of the United States of America, I did not understand everything immediately as I watched Amanda, accurately gesticulating while she was reading her poem..  When she stood there in front of the Capitol in Washington D.C,  young, black, female, pretty, intelligent, slender, in her bright yellow coat and the red clip in her voluminous dark hair keeping it in form, in front of the microphone, I was very much impressed by her courage and performance.

I think she represented what President Biden and many Americans were expecting,  not looking back, but right ahead, hoping for a better future.

Yes that young Girl Amanda impressed me as well. Good to watch were her hands gesticulating, doing a dance of their own.
I have the impression that Biden really wants one folk!
I do wish him well. I loved Kamela Harris and her smile. She is beautiful and strong.
Let’s see what happens in the future. I am inclined to watch the news in the USA again.
