The U3A in England
geschrieben von Alan

Hello, I'm Alan and I live in Marlow, a small town on the Thames between London and Oxford.  I am a member of the U3A - The University of the Third Age, which is very like your Seniorentreff.

U3A groups exist right across the country and senior citizens get together to form interest groups.  We used to meet in person until March 2020 when Covid struck.  Since then we have been meeting on Zoom, but people are beginning to organise their face to face meetings again.

You can look at this page, if you want to get an idea of what we do in Marlow : https://u3asites.org.uk/marlow/groups         Every town organises its own meetings and some are more organised than others !

I am the Convenor for the local German conversation group which meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month,  but I also organise a Lesezirkel for members up and down the country from Scotland to Cornwall.  We meet on Zoom twice a month and read a short story by a German author and then discuss it.

I have about 30 members, so we have to have two sittings.  Usually about 10 people are able to join us on each occasion.

Well, that's my introduction.  Please feel free to reply and comment.

Hello and greetings to you Alan
Sorry I just now noticed your writing here.  You are lucky to have a good going forum. There are a few who write here often but it is hard going to keep it alive.
As you could see we are a mixed group. I am Yoli and am born in Switzerland.
I have lived in England many years, did my nursing training there, married had two children. After the death of my husband I moved back home (even though I did not feel it to be my home) because my Brothers lived there.
I still miss England a lot. I do have friends there and wait to be able to visit them again.
As you can see in the Forum we have another chap who lives in Cornwall.
Jacare tries hard to keep the thread going, bless his heart!
To be honest I am sort of tired to keep on writing and coxing folks to join. Let see if this feeling passes *g*
Take care
Love Yoli

Nice to hear from you Yoli.  You need to organise a regular activity using Zoom.  Most people seem to have discovered how to use it during the Lockdown.

Maybe a little Lesezirkel.   Find a short story that you can read in a group in 20 minutes and that leaves 20 minutes for a discussion and a chat.

Or a simple discussion group.  There's always something in the news to talk about.

How many people are regulars on here?  If you are a regular - make a comment if you would like to have a Zoom meeting?  I suppose I could organise the first one

If you want a bit of fun in the meantime - try this quiz involving English proverbs.  I created it for my group of German learners in England but it would work for you too https://wordwall.net/play/5942/385/436

Thank you Alan
That was fun I managed 20 in 5.45
It seems I understand English better that German! Well that is normal, as I lived in England a while, married had kids became a widow and then I moved to Switzerland because I had brothers here. A good decision!
You know I earned so much more as a Nurse, got myself a reasonable flat and had help here from my brothers. Does not mean that I do not miss England I do!
I do not regret it but miss the easy English way folks have with each other.
Maybe someone will read here and like to help get the threat going again.

Nice to hear from you Alan!
Take care, maybe something happens here in this part of the forum and it moves again.
Till soon again
Greetings Yoli

Hi Alan welcome to ST
Thanks for your little game that was fun 😂

Maybe we should open up a thread like "German for foreigners", as I assume your pupils want to read and write German

I looked up Marlow, it is quite close to Reading where I have friends. Beautiful area anyway

Ah yes, we go to Reading for shopping purposes,  I particularly like the Oxfam Bookshop, as it specialises in foreign language items.  But Oxford is just as close and is more picturesque besides offering all the big shops that Marlow doesn't have.

Well done, Yoli,  That's a very decent result.  Here's one more bit of silliness - Mr Men titles.

I have three quizzes but I'll share the advanced version with you, as you would find the earlier ones too easy.
